MTD Scope Check

Check whether Making Tax Digital applies to you.

Use the free checker to start with the ordinary case, then reveal the joint-property branch only if you need it. The aim is a fast answer, not another long HMRC flowchart.

Last updated: 24 April 2026. Cross-checked against the MTD research cluster and linked official guidance.

What the checker asks

  • Do you earn from self-employment, UK property, foreign property, or none of these?
  • If property income is involved, is it jointly owned or solely yours?
  • What annual income should be counted before expenses?
  • If the property is shared, what percentage belongs to you?

Current threshold waves

The public checker is built around the current rollout bands described in the research.

From April 2026People with more than £50,000 of qualifying income.
From April 2027People with more than £30,000 of qualifying income.
From April 2028People with more than £20,000 of qualifying income.

Why the joint-property branch matters

The ordinary case should stay simple. That is why the checker starts with the basic income sources and only reveals the ownership-share questions when the user actually has property income to deal with.

If the property is jointly owned, the checker applies only your share to the total rather than the whole property amount. That is where many otherwise simple explainers still fall down.
